Bible Story: Peter's vision and his miraculous escape from prison
Bible Passages: Acts 10-12
After Stephen's death, a great persecution broke out against the church in Jerusalem. King Herod arrested some who belonged to the church, intending to persecute them. He had James, put to death with the sword. He also arrested Peter andput him in prison. He had him guarded by four squads of four soldiers each and planned to bring him out for public trial. While Peter was kept in prison, the church was earnestly praying to God for him. The night before Peter was to stand in trial,Peter was sleeping between two soliders, bound with two chains. Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared and woke Peter up. The chains fell off Peter's wrists, he put on his clothes and sandals and followed the angel out of the prison. They passed the first, second guards, and even the iron gate leading to the city. When they went through it and walked on the street, suddenly the angel left Peter! Peter realized that God has sent his angel and rescued him from Herod. He went to thehouse of Mary, where many people had gathered and were praying. When Peter knocked at the outer entrance, a servantnamed Rhoda answered the door. She was so overjoyed that she ran back without opening the door. Peter kept on kncoking and when they opened the door and saw him, they were astonished. The next day, Herod found out that Peter was gone, but did not find him even after a thorough search and ordered to execute the guards. One day, when Herod sat on his throne and delivered a public address to the people, they shouted, "this is the voice of a god, not of a man." But Herod did not give praises to God, an angel of the Lord struck him down and he was eaten by words and died. But the word of God continued to spread and flourish. This story reveals that even though there was a great persecution against the believers, God performed amazing miracles and wonder and His Word continued to spread and floursh. And when Peter was arrested and put in prison, the church was earnestly praying to God for him. They did not give up or remain hopeless. They continued to plead for help and put their trust in God even though they were facing danger and threat. There may have been times we were frustrated and gave up on praying, but this story is another reminder that God is listening! God continues to work and He will fulfill everything according to His purpose for His glory.
