Kids Blog-Jesus walks on the water
Last week, kids heard about a time one of Jesus' disciples took his eyes off Jesus and found himself in deep water!
Bible Story: Jesus walks on the water, Matthew 14:22-33
Bible verse: But Jesus immediately said to them: "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid." Matthew 14:27
Jesus had been teaching crowds of people by the Sea of Galilee. It was getting late, so He told His disciples to get into the boat and go to the other side of the sea. Jesus sent the crowds away and went up on the mountain to pray by himself. Later that night, when the disciples were in the boat, the wind came up and the water began to get rough. The disciples became afraid that their boat would sink and they would be drowned.
Before dawn, Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. They cried out in fear, "It's a ghost." But Jesus immediately said to them, "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid." Peter replied, "Lord, if it's you, tell me to come to you on the water." "Come," he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when Peter saw the wind, he was afraid and beginning to sink, cried out "Lord, save me!" Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. He said, "You of little faith, why did you doubt?" When they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. Then those who were in the boat worshipped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God."
When Peter saw the waves and felt the strong wind, he was afraid. But when he cried out, "Lord, save me!" Jesus immediately reached out his hand and saved him. In the same way, when we are afraid of what is happening around us, we can call on Jesus for help and look to Him in faith. When was the last time we felt worried, afraid or doubted God? There may be times we feel anxious and scared and ask, "When are we going back to school? How can we go back to normal life after Covid-19? Is my family going to be okay? Am I ever going to see my friends again? What is happening around the world right now?..." When we look at the winds, waves, and darkness, we will begin to sink. They will only remind us how powerless and helpless we are on our own. But when we keep our eyes on Jesus and and put our trust in Him, He will reach out His hand to save us and fill us with peace and comfort in the midst of storms. He will remind us that we can look to Him to rescue us from sin and death because He died on the cross for our sins.
