Kids Blog-What do we worship?
This week, kids learned that God created us to worship Him and serve Him only.
Bible Story: The Golden Calf, Exodus 32
Bible verse: Then the LORD said to Moses, "Go down, because your people, whom you brought up out of Egypt, have become corrupt. They have been quick to turn away from what I commanded them and have made themselves an idol cast in the shape of a calf. They have bowed down to it and sacrificed to it and have said, "These are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt." Exodus 32:7-8
While Moses was on Mount Sinai, receiving the two tables of the covenant law from God, people became impatient waiting for Moses to come down from the mountain. They gathered around Aaron and asked him to make them gods. Aaron told them to take off their gold earring and bring them to him. When all the people took off their earnings and brought them to Aaron, he took what they handed him and made it into an idol cast in the shape of a calf. Then they said, "These are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt." They were so quick to forget that it was the LORD that brought them out of Egypt and sinned against the LORD.
Then the LORD said to Moses, "Go down, because your people, have become corrupt. They have been quick to turn away from what I commanded them and have made themselves an idol cast in the shape of a calf. They have bowed down to it and sacrificed to it." The LORD was angry. But Moses sought the favor of the LORD and pleaded with him to turn from his anger. Then the LORD relented and did not bring on his people the disaster he had threatened. When Moses went down the mountain and saw the calf and the people dancing, his anger burned and he threw the tablets, breaking them to pieces. And he took the calf the people had made and burned it in the fire, then he grounded it to powder, scattered it on the water, and made the Israelites drink it. He stood at the entrance to the camp and said, "Whoever is for the LORD, come to me." And all the Levites rallied to him. Then he said, "This is what the LORD, the God of Israel says, each man strap a sword to his side, go back and forth through the camp from one end to the other, each killing his brother and friend and neighbor." The Levites obeyed Moses' command and that day about 3,000 people died. Then Moses said, "You have been set apart to the LORD today, for you were against your own sons and brothers and he has blessed you this day. The next day, Moses went back to the LORD to make atonement for their sin and prayed that God would forgive their sin.
This is a sad story that reveals the sinfulness of human heart. Even though God has created us to worship Him and serve Him only, we have become corrupt like the Israelites have, and turned away from our God. God rescued the Israelites from slavery and suffering, yet they were quick to forget who brought them up out of Egypt and turned to the golden calf and worshipped it. In the same way, we are quick to forget that God is our Creator, Savior and Healer who forgives our sins and saves us from death, instead of seeking God, we turn to entertainments, friends, different sources that seem to provide temporary pleasure, comfort, security, etc that distract us from being fully devoted to God.
When the Israelites sinned against the LORD, Moses did not just say, "I will pray to God that He would forgive your sin, just don't ever make God angry again." Moses burned the calf in the fire, grounded it to powder, made the Israelites drink it. Then Moses commanded that whoever is for the LORD come to Him and kill their brother, friend, and neighbor. It was radical. Our God is God of love, compassion, and forgiveness. He is also God of justice who punish sin. God hates sin and it must be eradicated. When the Levites killed about 3,000 men, Moses said, "You have been set apart to the LORD today..." What are the idols in our lives? What distracts us from worshipping and loving God? What do we spend most of our time on or where do we spend our money on the most?
This week, let's pray that God will reveal idols that have been stealing our devotions and love from Him, and let's ask God to give us clear mind and undivided attention to think about Him and worship Him only with all our heart.
