Kids Blog-On the road to Emmaus
Last week, kids learned that after Jesus rose from the dead, he appeared to his disciples!
Bible Story: On the road to Emmaus, Luke 24
Bible Verse: They asked each other, "Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scripture to us?" Luke 24:32
The same day the women and Peter saw the empty tomb, two disciples were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem. They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. While they were talking, Jesus came up and walked along with them! But they were kept from recongining the risen Jesus! Jesus asked them, "What are you discussing together as you walk along?" Two disciples looked very sad. One of them, named Cleopas asked Jesus, "Are you the only one visitng Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?" They were shocked that this traveler did not know what happened in Jerusalem recently. Jesus was well-known for he was a prophet, teacher, healer, miracle-worker and many hoped that he would redeem Israel. However, he was handed over to be sentenced to death and crucified. But they heard unbelivable report from the women who went to the tomb early that morning but did not find Jesus' body and saw the angels who said Jesus was alive! Some disciples also went to the tomb and found the tomb empty as well. Jesus said to the two disciples, "How foolish you are and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and enterhis glory?" And Jesus explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself. When the approached the village, Jesus continued on as if he were going farther. But they invited him to stay with them for it was nearly evening. So he went in to stay with them. They sat at the table and Jesus took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they finally recongized Jesus! And Jesus disappeared from their sight. They also realized that their hearts were burning whileJesus talked with them on the road and opened the Scriptures to them. The two disciples got up and returned to Jerusalem. They told the disciples, "It is true! The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon."
When the two disciples were walking on the road, they were worried, anxious, sad, and felt hopeless because they thought their Teacher, Messiah, Saviour were dead, gone forever. They did not realize that He has risen from the dead! They also did not realize that He was walking right next to them the whole time! When we go through hard times, sometimes we forget that Jesus is with us, walking with us, strengthening us, encouraging us, filling us with the power of the Holy Spirit and reminding us that He is our only Hope. This week, let us thank Jesus for His presence in our everyday lives and put our trust in Him!
