Kids Blog-The Rich and the Kingdom of God
Last week, kids learned that Jesus taught us not to store up for ourselves treasures on earth, but store up treasures in heaven.
Bible Story: The Rich and the Kingdom of God Matthew 19:16-30
Bible Verse: Jesus answered, "If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasures in heaven. Then come, follow me." Matthew 19:21
In Matthew 19, a man came up to Jesus and asked, "Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?" Jesus replied, "Why do you ask me about what is good? There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, keep the commandments." When the man asked which ones, Jesus replied, "You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, honor your father and mother, and love your neighbor as yourself." The young man said he kept all those comandments and asked what he still lacked. Jesus told him that if he wants to be perfect, he should go sell his possessions and give to the poor, and he will have treasures in heaven, then he should come, follow him. When the young man heard this, he went away sad because he was wealthy. Then Jesus said to his disciples it is hard for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of heaven, it is easier for a camel to go throughthe eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God." The young man's love for money was greater than his love for God. If we are not careful, our love for stuff can be greater than our desires for God, but Jesus teaches us that if we wants to enter the Kingdom of God, we must give God first place in our life. What do we value the most in our lives? Are there things we think about, want, desire more than we long for God? As we reflect on how we spend our time, money, and energy, let us start storing up treasures in heaven by obeying God's Word, loving Him and serving others.
