Kids Blog-Serve others
Last week, kids learned that Jesus came to serve others.
Bible verse: "just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Matthew 20:28
Bible story: Jesus comes to Jerusalem as King Matthew 21:1-11
In this story, Jesus was traveling with His disciples to Jerusalem. Jesus sent two disciples to go into the village where they would find a donkey tied with a colt. He told them to untie the animals and bring them to him and said if anyone asked what they were doing, they should say that the LORD needs them. They brought the donkey and the colt, put their robes on them and Jesus sat on top of them. As Jesus entered Jerusalem, a large crowd of people spread their robes on the road, cut palm branches from the trees, welcomed him and shouted, "Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!" People thought Jesus would be a conquering king that would save them from the Romans. But Jesus was a different kind of king than the people were expecting.
Hundreds of years earlier, the prophet Zechariah said, "Rejoice greatly, daughter Zion! Shout, daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey." He could have chosen an elephant, a white horse, or a lion, but Jesus came riding on a donkey humbly. Jesus also said in Matthew 20:28, the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. Jesus came riding on a donkey humbly, not to be served, but to serve, to take the punishment we deserve for our sins. Jesus took up our pain and suffering by dying on the cross for our sins so that we may receive forgiveness and eternal life.
This week, as we thank Jesus for what He has done for us, let us also humbly serve and love others as Jesus loved us.
