Bible Story: The Parable of the Unmerciful Servant Matthew 18:21-35
In this story, Peter came to Jesus and asked, "Lord, how many times should I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?" Jesus answered, "Not seven times, but seventy times seven." I think Peter asked that question because he probably struggled with the same thing we struggle with in our lives at home, school, in our relationship with others, forgiveness. Ever since our governor issued a statewide stay-at-home order to slow the spread of coronavirus, many of us have been staying at home, taking online classes, playing at home, and spending more time with family. At home, when your brother or sister does something wrong to you, you may want to be mean to them or hit them when your parents are not looking instead of forgiving them. Forgiveness sometimes may be difficult. So you may have asked this question, "How many times should I forgive my brother or sister when they do something wrong to me?
So Jesus told a story to explain. He said there was a king who wanted to collect money from his servants who owed him money. There was a servant who owed him 10,000 talents. He was not able to pay, so the king ordered that he and his family to be sold to pay back what he owed. Then the servant fell on his knees and begged. The king felt sorry for him, forgave him what he owed and let him go. But when that servant went out and found a fellow servant who owed him 100 denarii, he grabbed him and began to choke him. The other servant fell on his knees and begged him, but the first servant refused and threw him into prison. When the king heard about this, he called for the first servant to be brought back to him. He said, "You wicked servant, I canceled all that debt of yours because you begged me to. Shouldn't you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?" And he handed him over to the jailers. Jesus said, "this is how my Father in heaven will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother or sister from your heart."
Even though we sinned against God, God forgave us by sending his one and only Son Jesus to die on the cross for our sins. In the same way, we should forgive our brothers and sisters as God forgave us. Ephesians 4:32 writes, "Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you" Next time, when we are in a situation requiring us to forgive, let us depend on God to help us forgive and remember this Bible verse!
