Kids Blog-"Do whatever he tells you."
Last week, kids learned that Jesus performed miracles to help people believe that He is the Messiah, the Son of God.
Bible Story: Jesus Changes Water Into Wine, John 2:1-12
Bible verse: What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory, and his disciples believed in him. John 2:11
John 2 records Jesus' first miracle at a wedding in Cana. Jesus, his disciples, and his mother has been invited to the wedding. But during the wedding celebration, the wine ran out. Jesus' mother said to him, "They have no more wine." She was probably hoping and expecting Jesus to resolve the problem. But to the readers' surprise, Jesus replied, "My hour has not yet come." Mary could have said to Jesus, "Why don't you do something about it? Do you not see how urgent this situation is? They need wine right away! You should help them." Instead, Mary simply said to the servants, "Do whatever he tells you." Mary was patient and trusted in God's Will.
Nearby there were six stone water jars, each holding from 20-30 gallons. Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water." And the servants filled them to the brim. The servants could have been puzzled and asked themselves, "Why do we need to fill the jars with water? We need wine, not water!" But like Mary told the servants, they did whatever Jesus told them to do. They obeyed Jesus' Word. Then Jesus said something to the servants that was more confusing than his first instruction. He told them, "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet." The Bible does not say the servants refused to listen to Jesus' instruction because it did not make sense in their head, instead they obeyed Jesus once again without complaining. The master of the banquet tasted the water which had been turned to wine and he was amazed! He did not know where it had come from. As a wedding planner, he had no idea who saved the wedding last minute! But the servants knew that it was Jesus who had turned water into wine! The master of the banquet called the bridegroom aside and said, "Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink, but you have saved the best ill now!"
When the wine was gone in the midst of chaos and problem, Mary and the servants calmly obeyed Jesus. Mary believed that Jesus would do what was best, so she told the servants to listen to Jesus. Even though Jesus' instruction might have not made sense, the servants did what he told them to do. When was the last time we questioned and doubted God's Word instead of being obedient, patient and calm? Let us pray and ask God to give us faith to obey Him for He knows what is best.
