Kids Blog-What shall we do?
Last Sunday, kids learned about the Holy Spirit!
Bible story: The Holy Spirit Comes at Pentecost Acts 2
Bible verse: When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, "Brothers, what shall we do?" Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit." Acts 2:37-38
After Jesus rose from death, he appeared to the apostles over forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God. He gave them this command, "Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit." He told them that they will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on them and they will be His witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samara and to the ends of the earth. After he said this, Jesus ascended to heaven and the apostles returned to Jerusalem. They all joined together constantly in prayer.
On the day of Pentecost, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them! When the crowd heard this sound, they were amazed that they understood them declaring the wonders of God in their own languages. Some, however, made fun of them and said they have had too much wine.
Then Peter stood up and addressed the crowd. He told them this fulfilled the prophecy of Joel and though Jesus was crucified, God raised Him up, He is alive, they were witnesses, and that they can know for certain that Jesus is both LORD and Messiah! When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter, "What shall we do?" Peter said, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit."
This promise is true for you and I. God promises to forgive our sins and gives us the gift of the Holy Spirit when we repent, turn away from our sins and turn to Him. After the apostles were filled with the Holy Spirit, they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching, fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to prayer. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. By the power of the Holy Spirit, they lived and loved like Jesus did!
This week, as we think about what Jesus has done for us, let us ask the Holy Spirit to change our hearts, to turn away from our sins and give us power to live and love like Jesus.
