Kids Blog-Jesus and Zacchaeus
Last Sunday, kids heard a bible story about a man who met Jesus. When this man met Jesus, his life was changed forever!
Bible Story: Zacchaeus the tax collector
Bible verse: Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost." Luke 19:9-10
Jesus was traveling through Jericho, where a man named Zacchaeus lived. He was a chief tax collector and was wealthy. He wanted to see who Jesus was, but because he was short, he could not see over the crowd. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way. When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, "Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today." So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly. All the people saw this and began to mutter, "He has gone to be the guest of a sinner." Many Jews did not like tax collectors like Zacchaeus because they were often dishonest.
But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, "Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount." Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost."
In this story, there are a few things to take note of Zacchaeus. Zacchaeus was a chief tax collector and was wealthy. Even though people probably did not like or respected Zacchaeus, Zaccheaus, in his own way, achieved status, wealth, and reputation. When Jesus came into town, Zacchaeus actually really wanted to see Jesus, the Bible tells us that he ran ahead and climbed a tree to see him! What is more amazing is that when Jesus saw Zacchaeus, he called him by name even though they have never met before. Because Jesus is the Son of God, Messiah, and Savior, he already knew who Zacchaeus was, what he did for living. Jesus knew that he was wealthy, yet he thirsted for something more for wealth and status did not satisfy his soul. Jesus knew Zacchaeus was sinful, yet eager to meet Jesus despite embarrassment and shame. Jesus invited himself to Zacchaeus' house to spend time with him and Zacchaeus welcomed him gladly! As Zaccchaeus spent time with Jesus, he was convicted of wrongdoing, repented, and said to Jesus, "Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount." The crowds thought Zacchaeus was beyond redemption because of the weight of his sin, yet Jesus went to his house and declared that salvation has come to his house! Zacchaeus, too, was saved and forgiven. Jesus accepted and loved him!
In the same way, there may be times we feel that way. We feel as if we have gone so far from God that we are underserving God's grace and salvation. Yet, the Bible tells us the Son of Man came to seek and save the lost, sinful people like us. And just as Jesus changed Zacchaeus' heart, Jesus changes our hearts to repent of our sins and turn to God.
