Kids Blog-When do we worship?
This week, kids learned that God created us to worship Him all the time.
Bible Story: Paul and Silas in Prison, Acts 16:16-40
Bible verse: About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. Acts 16:25
When Paul and Silas were going to the place of prayer, they met a female slave who had a spirit. She earned a great deal of money for her owners by predicting the future. When she saw Paul and Silas, she followed them and kept shouting, "These men are servants of the Most high God, who are telling you the way to be saved." She did this for many days. Finally, Paul became annoyed that he turned around and said to the spirit, "In the name of Jesus Christ, I command you to come out of her!" At that moment the spirit left her. When her owners realized that their hope of making money was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace. They said, "These men are Jews, and are throwing our city into an uproar by advocating customs unlawful for us Romans to accept or practice." Paul and Silas were attacked, stripped, beaten with rods, severely flogged, and they were thrown into prison.
What happens next surprise everyone because Paul and Silas were in the cell, their feet fastened in the stocks! They prayed and sang hymns to God! And the Bible tells us the other prisoners were listening to them. They might have wondered, "who are these people praying and singing in the middle of the night? They look like they got beaten pretty badly. I see their wounds, scars, bloody nose...Why are they worshipping? Shouldn't they be complaining and resenting their God?" Then, something radical happened. Suddenly, there was a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. All the prison doors flew open and everyone's chains came loose. Now, this was a perfect chance for Paul and Silas to run away. They could have interpreted it as God's miraculous answer to their fervent prayer. But instead, they chose to stay in their cell...When the jailer woke up and saw the prison doors open, he was going to kill himself because he though the prisoners had escaped. But Paul shouted, "Don't harm yourself! We are all here!" The jailer fell trembling before Paul and Silas and asked, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" They replied, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household." Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all the others in his house. The jailer took them and washed their wounds, then immediately he and all his household were baptized. The jailer brought Paul and Silas into his house and even prepared a meal for them, he was filled with joy because he had come to believe in God!
When we face hardship in our lives, we might be tempted to think, "I don't feel like worshipping God right now. Why do I need to worship Him when I am suffering?" Worshipping God helps focus our heart on Him and gives us peace and comfort only He can provide. When we worship God, He helps us think about what He wants and keeps us focused on living His way by loving Him and loving others. It shifts our focus from ourselves and our problems to God and His Kingdom. When Paul and Silas were persecuted and thrown into prison, they chose to worship God despite their suffering. They did not sit there in anger, sorrow or resentment, they prayed and sang hymns to God. The other prisoners took notice of what they were doing and God even led them to share His Word with the jailer who was about to kill himself.
God created us to worship Him. Let us worship Him even when we are sad or mad. Let us ask God to help focus our heart on Him again so we can live for Him, not for ourselves. Give Him thanks for saving us from our sin and for the gift of eternal life. Let's also pray that just as the jailer and his whole household came to believe in God through Paul and Silas' worship, that God would reveal Himself to people around us through our worship, that we would speak life, bring encouragement and share God's light with them.
