Kids Blog-Ezra's Prayer
Last week, kids learned that God's people completed and dedicated the temple despite opposition. The people of Israel celebrated the dedication of the house of God with joy. However, when Ezra learned that the people of Israel sinned against the LORD, he fell on his knees, prayed, and mourned over their unfaithfulness. Ezra led people to confession of sin and repentance.
Bible Story: Ezra comes to Jerusalem, Ezra 4-10
Bible Verse: "Though we are slaves, our God has not forsaken us in our bondage. He has shown us kindness in the sight of the kings of Perisa: He has granted us new life to rebuild the house of our God and repair its ruins, and he has given us a wall of protection in Judah and Jerusalem." Ezra 9:9
God has restored the Israelites by bringing them home from their captivity in Babylon. God has shown favor to His people by moving the kings' hearts to bring honor to God's temple. Ezra and the people were overwhelmed with joy and thankfulness when God's promise was fulfilled and the temple was completed. However, when the leaders came to Ezra and told him that the people of Israel, including the priests and the Levites have engaged in detestable practices and intermarried with the Cannanites, Hittites, Perizzites, Jebusites, Ammorites, Moabites, Egyptians, and Amorites women, Ezra tore his clothes, fell on his knees, spread out his hands to the LORD and prayed. Ezra confessed people's sin and repented for their unfaithfulness. Ezra mourned over the evil deeds of the people. Ezra was ashamed and disgraced because of their great guilt and acknolwedged that not one of them could stand in God's presence. While Ezra was praying, confessing, weeping and throwing himself down before God, men, women, and children gathered and they too wept bitterly. They repented their sins, made a covenant before their God, and honored Him by separating themselves from their foreign wives. The Israelites not only repented and mourned over their unfaithfulness, they acted and turned away from sin by sending away their foreign wives and their children. Just as God rescued the Israelites from their bondage, God redeemed us from our bondage to sin. God has shown us kindness and compassion by forgiving our sins and giving us new life. Let us repent, thank Him for His love and forgiveness, and let us also turn away from our sin.
