Kids Blog-Crossing the Sea
Last week, kids learned that when the Israelites saw the mighty hand of the LORD displayed against the Egyptians, the people feared the LORD and put their trust in him and in Moses his servant.
Bible Story: Crossing the Sea
Bible Verse: "Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the LORD will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again." Exodus 14:13
When Pharaoh let the Israelites go, God did not lead them on the road through the Philistine country, though that was shorter. God knew that if they face war, they might change their minds and return to Egypt. So God let the people around by the desert road toward the Red Sea. By day, the LORD went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar offire to give them light, so they could travel by day or night. The LORD told Moses to tell the Israelites to encamp by the sea. When the king of Egypt was told that the people had flet, Pharaoh and his officials changed their minds. The LORD hardened the heart ofPharaoh king of Egypt, so he pursued the Israelites. When the Israelites saw the Egyptians' army and chariots, they were terrified and cried out to the LORD. They said to Moses that it would have been better for them to serve the Egyptians than to die in the desert. However, Moses told the people not to be afraid, instead to stand firm and they will see the deilverance the LORD will bring them. He reminded them that the LORD will fight for them, and they only need to be still. Then the LORD said to Moses, "Why are you crying out to me? Tell the Israelites to move on. Raise your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea to divide the water so that the Israelites can go through the sea on dry ground." It was God's plan to gain glory through Pharaoh and all his army and the Egyptians will know that He is the LORD. Moses obeyed the LORD and stretched out his hand over the sea, and all that night the LORD drove the sea back with a strong wind and turned it into dry land. The waters were divided so the Israelites crossed the sea with a wall of water on their right and their left. The Egyptians pursued them and followed them into the sea. However, the LORD swept them into the sea, so not one of them survived. That day the LORD saved Israel from the Egyptians and people feared the LORD and put their trust in Him and Moses his servant.
When the Israelites stood in front of the Red Sea and saw the Egyptians army chasing them in their back, they must have thought that they were surely going to die. They lost all their hope and complained to Moses. Even though they just witnessed God bringing ten plagues to punish the Egyptians and delivered the Israelites from slavery, they forgot that their God is all-powerful, mighty, supernatural, and He can perform miracles and save them once again. Often times, we forget who our God is. Just as God guided the Israelites, protected them with a pillar of cloud and a pillar of fire and provided water and food for them in the desert, God is the One who guides us, protects us, and provides everything for us. And when we cry out to God, our God hears us and He has the power and authority to deliver us. When we face hardship in our lives, instead of complaining about the situation, let us put our trust in Him and seek Him with all our heart.
